For example, they may put up with being bullied by administrators and higher ranking faculty members, and they often remain silent when their contracts have been violated. Lecturers are conscious of the fact that administrators and tenured professors make decisions about the courses they will be assigned to teach and, as a result, they will do all that they can to stay in good standing with their superiors – even if it means enduring all kinds of abuse. Like approximately 53 percent of all professors who teach for the Cal State University system which includes Cal State Northridge, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cardona was hired into an employment position known as a “lecturer.”īecause lecturers are aware of the fact that the positions they hold in the hierarchical world of academia are near the bottom of the barrel, Annette Cardona was not alone in the fear she exhibited in the weeks before her death. ![]() Why did she keep it from us?īecause she was terrified that the Cal State Northridge university administrators would get wind of her illness and take the classes she was scheduled to teach in the fall of 2011 away from her. Sadly all of her Cal State Northridge colleagues were shocked at the news of her death because none of us had been told she had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. ![]() But as I was reviewing a video tribute to her, made for Reelz Channel’s Daily motion, I was struck by how proud she was to be a Cal State Northridge professor.Īs the Daily Motion reflected upon her life, they played a clip from an interview Cardona gave at a Grease sing-along event and the first thing that she said was “First of all, I’m a professor at Cal State Northridge now.” It’s been nearly a year since Cal State Northridge lecturer Annette “Charles” Cardona died, and her friends, family and CSUN colleagues still miss her.Īlthough Cardona taught speech courses CSUN Chicano Studies department for over nine years, she was probably best known for her role as Cha Cha DiGregorio in the Movie Grease and her iconic dance scene with John Travolta.
